Our Tips for How to Organise Baby Clothes - Fauve & Co
7 Super Helpful Tips for Busy Parents
(Taming the tiny wardrobe, one onesie at a time)
1. Our first step for organising baby clothes - Start with a Big Baby Clothes Audit
So, what’s the first step to reining in the chaos? A good old-fashioned baby wardrobe audit! Spend a little time now to save you a big headache later. Start by grabbing ALL their clothes, comforters, swaddles, blankets, and sort them into these three piles:
- Good Fit: Keep these baby clothes front and centre for current use
- Future Fit: Fold and store away for later use
- Farewell: Outgrown, stained, or never worn. It’s time to part ways
There is no need to spend more time than necessary on this. Make it quick to help you zero in on the baby clothes you actually need and say goodbye to the ones long overdue for a clear-out.
2. Label Your Storage Bins
Now that you’ve sorted everything into three lots, it’s time to organise the ‘Future’ and ‘Farewell’ baby clothing piles. Store them in clearly labelled bins for easy access. For the ‘Future’ pile, organise by three-month stages (e.g., “0-3 months,” “3-6 months”). This way, when your little one has their next growth spurt, you can easily swap out clothes without any fuss.
As for the ‘Farewell’ pile, decide which items you’d like to keep for future bubs or for sentimental reasons and which ones to donate to charities, friends, or family. Then, store and label them accordingly.
3. Hang Your Baby Clothes with Purpose
Now that the general sorting is done, it’s time to tackle the pile of baby clothes that still fit your newborn. First, decide what belongs in the closet and what goes into the drawers. Closet space is precious, so use it wisely by hanging bulkier items, such as jumpers, outfits, and rarely worn special occasion or seasonal clothes. The rest can be neatly organised in the drawers.
Since baby clothes are tiny (I mean, obviously, right?), you’ll notice the bottom half of the closet is just sitting there, waiting to be used! If you need more space, consider adding a second rail or slotting in a cube unit with storage boxes underneath. It’s an easy way to double your storage and make the most of your space!

4. The Art of Drawer Organisation
Now, let’s dive into those drawers! Start by separating the baby clothing pieces by type - singlets, bottoms, onesies, rompers, swaddles, etc. And if possible, give each their own dedicated drawer. Next, create zones within each drawer:
- Left for bigger sizes, right for smaller fits.
- Front for in-season, back for out-of-season.
This system makes it easy to keep track of what’s most worn and ensures the clothing essentials are always within reach. Plus, you’ll know it’s time for a wardrobe refresh and to rotate out clothes if you're constantly grabbing from the left side.
As a bonus tip for the drawers, we suggest using the KonMari folding method (vertical folding) with labelled cube organisers. This keeps things tidy and easy to access, maximises drawer space, and makes everything super easy to find!
(The KonMari Method is a system that encourages tidying by category)
5. Over-the-Door
Another awesome trick for your organisation toolkit is reusing an over-the-door shoe organiser for all those tiny baby items. The small pockets are perfect for hats, socks, headbands, and little shoes! It keeps these essentials within easy reach and frees up space in your drawers and closet. Plus, no more rummaging around – everything has its own little spot!6. Rotate and Purge Your Baby’s Clothes
To stay ahead of the game, set a reminder for every three months to go through your baby's wardrobe. Babies grow faster than you can blink, so make it a habit to remove clothes they've outgrown and replace them with bigger ones periodically.Furthermore, save future-you hassle by using two laundry baskets: one for dirty clothes and another for items ready to be donated. This system makes on-the-go sorting a breeze.
7. Create a "Sentimental Keepers" Section
Not every piece of baby clothing is for practical reasons. Some end up holding a special place in our hearts. This is why you should set aside a small, dedicated space for those extra meaningful outfits, like their first onesie, birthday clothes, or holiday costumes. You don’t need to keep every tiny item, but having a special "Memory Box" makes it easier to revisit those precious moments as they grow. Plus, it’s a great way to avoid clutter while still holding onto the items that mean the most!
And there you have it! With these seven helpful tips, you’re ready to conquer the baby clothing chaos like a pro. No more digging through piles of onesies or losing socks to the void! With just a little time and effort, you’ll have everything you need to handle every growth spurt and fashion emergency your little one throws at you, keeping you one step ahead of the game. Happy organising!
